Description

Mexican troops prayed in the original Presidio Chapel of San Elizario and U.S. troops would be stationed there in 1850 and California volunteers would occupy it during the Civil War to keep the area free of Confederate troops. The original is gone, destroyed by flooding. The chapel that stands today was built in 1877, rather than in the 1770s, but remains an excellent example of the Spanish Mission style of architecture.
