Durango, Mexico Travel Guide

Complete Vacation, Recreation and Tourism Information

If Durango looks like something straight out of a Western movie there's good reason—it is. Popular as a filming location for John-Wayne era moving pictures, this city calls to the cowboy in all of us. Spend a leisurely afternoon poking around the central plazas and the Museo de Arqueologia de Durango Ganot-Peschard for a look at exhibitions on Durango's past.

The historic sights of the city itself are easily explore in an afternoon, but for a wander around the true 'Wild West', head out of town to see old sets keeping a close watch out for Indians and cattle rustlers.

Culturally-driven visitors can make use of the outing to stop at the Museo de Arte Guillermo Ceniceros for the art of local artist so named, before leaving Durango for good.

Head west towards Mazatlan for access to Angel's Gateway State Park via the town of El Salto. Take a hike through the Sierra Madre and pitch a tent out in the wilderness for a little solitude and time with nature. Travelers determined to stick to the beaten path can find stunning views from the steep section of road called the 'Devil's Backbone' and take a photo break at the picturesque town of Copala before descending to Mazatlan.
